Article: Forensic social work : an important role in the investigation of child abuse

Abstract

The role of a forensic social worker is very specific in the investigation of rape and sexual abuse cases involving child victims. The case of Nicholas Ninow, the so-called Dros rapist, highlights the important role played by these specialists. In this case, Capt Pierre Botha, the investigating officer, requested Capt Karin Botha, a forensic social worker, to compile a competency assessment report which focused on the seven-year-old victim's ability to testify in criminal court proceedings. On the request of Adv Dorah Ngobeni, who was the prosecutor in the case, Capt Botha also compiled a victim impact report which focused on the emotional and psychological trauma experienced by the rape victim. The role this forensic social worker played in this case was crucial as she ensured that this child victim had a voice in court, which ultimately led to Nicholas Ninow being sentenced to life incarceration.
